Why this conversation matters
Democratic leadership is not a performance of charisma. It is a public covenant that centers the people as ends, not means. In public life, citizens are not an audience. They are co-authors of policy and co-stewards of outcomes. This article clarifies what democratic leadership is, grounds that vision in Scripture and scholarship, and offers a practical call to action for voters who expect authenticity, accountability, and service.
A scriptural anchor: servant leadership is not optional
In Matthew 20:26-28, Jesus teaches that “whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant” and that the Son of Man came “not to be served but to serve.” Servant leadership is service to the people, not rule over them. This is a clear standard for anyone seeking authority in a democratic society. Public authority is legitimate only when it is directed to the good of others, is delivered with humility, and is open to correction through participation and accountability.
