Author’s Note

I have written this essay for those who govern where they live; mayors, council members, planners, and community advocates who understand that the soul of a town is revealed not in its budget but in who it allows to stay. Affordable housing is more than a policy concern; it is a democratic covenant between a people and their government. When we fail to honor that covenant, we do not merely lose buildings, we lose belonging, trust, and the very architecture of democracy.
