WHAT DOES SEPT. 11 MEAN TO YOUR FAMILY?

Twenty-five years have passed since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, but the memories remain deeply personal for millions of American families.

Many people remember exactly where they were when they first heard that an airplane had struck the World Trade Center. They remember watching the second tower fall, learning about the attack on the Pentagon and hearing about the passengers and crew of Flight 93.

I was working as a German Teacher at Central High in Prince George’s County Public Schools. Moments after the first plane hit the South Tower one of  my students came  running into my classroom yelling a plane hit the World Trade Center.  We all thought he was joking. Suddenly we  all realized what he was saying .  I immediately turn on the  TV and in horror we all experienced the sobering truth of the situation of the moment.

When in what we thought as minutes  a second plane hit the North Tower ….then we heard a plane on this clear and sunny day over Washington DC fell out of the sky and hit the Pentagon.

Now that  it occurred  near home something was to to happen again in the Washington DC area. The White House, National Landmarks, even the US Capitol Building were potential targets for the next attack.

I worried for each and every Student. I worried for their some of whom worked inside the Pentagon. 

For younger generations, Sept. 11 is history rather than memory. Their understanding of that day comes from parents, grandparents, teachers and others who experienced it.
