  • 1. The Campaign: It was the second major engagement of Grant's Overland Campaign.
  • 2. The Overland Campaign was aimed to destroy Lee’s army and capture the Confederate capital of Richmond.

  • 3. The Dates:
The fighting raged continuously from May 8 to May 21, 1864, after the inconclusive Battle of the Wilderness.
  • 4. The "Mule Shoe": The Confederate line featured a prominent, vulnerable salient known as the "Mule Shoe." Its exposure to concentrated Union artillery led to massive casualties on both sides.

  • 5. The "Bloody Angle":
During the May 12 Union assault on the Mule Shoe, intense hand-to-hand combat ensued. This section of the trenches is widely considered some of the most desperate and brutal fighting of the entire Civil War.
  •  5. Massive Casualties: It was the costliest battle of the Overland Campaign, with approximately 18,000 Union and 12,000 Confederate casualties.
  • 6. Death of Sedgwick: Union Major General John Sedgwick—the highest-ranking Union officer killed in the war—was shot and killed by a Confederate sharpshooter on May 9 while dismissively telling his men the enemy "couldn't hit an elephant at this distance".
  • 7. Upton’s Assault: On May 10, Union Colonel Emory Upton led an innovative, tightly packed assault column against the Confederate line. While it ultimately failed, it successfully breached the works temporarily and inspired Grant to scale up the tactic.
  • 8. Grant's Tenacity: After the battle, rather than retreating or regrouping to the north as previous Union commanders had, Grant famously wrote to Washington, D.C., "I propose to fight it out on this line if it takes all summer" before pushing his army further south.
  • 9. Extensive Earthworks: Both armies made unprecedented use of defensive earthworks and trenches. This set a grim precedent for the remainder of the war and foreshadowed late 19th-century and 20th-century trench warfare.

  • 10. Tactical Result:
The battle was tactically inconclusive. The Confederates held their line, but the Union maintained the offensive momentum, keeping Lee in a constant retreat toward Richmond.
