Fall Sports in Spotsylvania County: 2026 Preview

With the 2026–27 school year underway, Spotsylvania County’s five public high schools are getting ready for another busy fall sports season. Football may get most of the Friday-night attention, but there is plenty happening across the county in volleyball, field hockey, golf, cross country and cheer.

The five schools—Chancellor, Courtland, Massaponax, Riverbend and Spotsylvania—offer a strong lineup of fall athletics.

Football remains the centerpiece of the fall.

Chancellor’s athletics program lists football among its fall sports, along with field hockey, golf, cross country, volleyball and competition cheer.

Massaponax opens its 2026 football season August 28 against Courtland, followed by Spotsylvania, Riverbend and Chancellor in a series of early county matchups.

🏐 Girls Volleyball

Volleyball is another major fall sport throughout the county, with teams competing for district and regional positioning.

The Cougars will be looking to continue their strong athletic tradition. Courtland’s fall program includes football, field hockey, golf and other seasonal sports.

🟠 Massaponax

The Panthers will be one of the schools to watch, particularly with a challenging football schedule that begins with a county rivalry against Courtland.

🐻 Riverbend

The Bears have a full fall lineup that includes football, volleyball, field hockey, golf, boys’ and girls’ cross country and cheer.

🛡️ Spotsylvania

The Knights also offer a broad fall athletic program. The school’s athletics program lists sports including football, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, golf and cheer.

1. The county football race
Riverbend and Courtland enter with high expectations, while Massaponax, Spotsylvania and Chancellor will be looking to make their own statements.
