WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger will deliver the Democratic response to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday from the historic area of Colonial Williamsburg.

According to an announcement from the governor’s office, Spanberger will speak on Feb. 24, offering the Democratic Party’s nationally televised rebuttal following Trump’s address to Congress.

In a statement, Spanberger said she chose Williamsburg because of its historical significance in shaping American democracy.

“Since the people of the Virginia Colony first gathered to take on the extraordinary task of governing themselves, Williamsburg has served as a testament to the power of ordinary citizens to shape the future of our nation,” she said. “I look forward to joining Virginians in this historic place to lay out the next chapter of our story.”

Williamsburg served as Virginia’s colonial capital beginning in 1699 and played a key role in early American governance. In May 1776, the Virginia delegates meeting there voted to push for independence from Great Britain. Weeks later, the Virginia Declaration of Rights was adopted in the city, a document that influenced both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Bill of Rights.

The Democratic response to the State of the Union is a longstanding tradition, giving the party not in the White House an opportunity to outline its priorities and contrast its vision with that of the president.

Spanberger, a former congresswoman who was elected Virginia’s first female governor in 2025, is expected to focus on economic issues, affordability and national priorities, themes she emphasized during her campaign and early months in office.

Her remarks will follow Trump’s address, which is set to outline the administration’s agenda for the year ahead.
