SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. — The 2026-27 high school sports season is officially underway, with athletes from Chancellor, Courtland, Massaponax, Riverbend and Spotsylvania taking the field and court as the county’s fall sports calendar gets rolling.

The opening week has featured football, field hockey and volleyball, with more games scheduled next week.

FIELD HOCKEY

Courtland vs. Massaponax was one of the county’s first head-to-head matchups of the season. The two teams were scheduled to meet Friday, Aug. 21, at 6:30 p.m. Current online score listings do not yet show a verified final score, so The Gazette will not publish an unconfirmed result.

Chancellor opened its field-hockey schedule Thursday, Aug. 20, against Louisa County. The online record likewise lists the game but does not provide a verified final score.

FOOTBALL

The county’s football teams are still in the opening phase of the season, with several programs using preseason and early-season contests to evaluate their rosters.

Chancellor JV played Albemarle on Aug. 20. The game is listed online, but a final score has not been reported in the available database.

For the varsity programs, the regular-season schedule is getting ready to accelerate as the calendar moves toward September.

VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball is also getting underway. Spotsylvania High School is scheduled for upcoming matches against Essex and Louisa County, including varsity and junior-varsity contests.

WHAT’S NEXT

The coming week will bring a much fuller schedule.

Among the games already listed:

  • Spotsylvania field hockey vs. Fluvanna County — Aug. 25
  • Spotsylvania volleyball vs. Essex — Aug. 25
  • Spotsylvania JV football vs. Fluvanna County — Aug. 26
  • Spotsylvania volleyball and field hockey vs. Louisa County — Aug. 27
  • Additional football and fall-sports contests will follow as the season moves into September.

THE GAZETTE SCOREBOARD

Friday, Aug. 21–Saturday, Aug. 22

At press time, publicly available score databases had not posted verified final scores for every Spotsylvania County contest. The Gazette will use verified scores rather than publish estimates or unofficial social-media reports.

That is particularly important during the opening week, when schedules are being updated rapidly and some schools have not yet entered results.

GAZETTE SPORTS NOTE

The fall season is just beginning, but the next two weeks should provide the first real indication of which Spotsylvania County teams are ready to contend for district and regional postseason berths.

The Gazette will continue tracking all five county high schools — Chancellor, Courtland, Massaponax, Riverbend and Spotsylvania — throughout the season.

Scores and schedules verified against currently available school and sports databases as of Aug. 23, 2026.
