First Elected Student Representative to Spotsylvania County School Board 

Purpose Of The Student Representatives

The County Web Site says “In the fall of each school year, the Superintendent appoints one high school junior to serve on the School Board for a one-year term. The student member functions as an advisory member of the Board and does not have voting rights and the student is not able to participate in closed sessions. School Board Policy BBBB provides an overview of the student school board member position.”

Eligibility & Qualifications

Eligible students must:

  • Be a Spotsylvania County resident attending SCPS
  • Be in the 11th grade at the time their term begins
  • Have a 2.5 grade point average or higher with no failing grades in the current semester
  • Be unrelated to a School Board member or SCPS Superintendent’s cabinet member
  • Complete the application process
  • Commit to attend regular meetings of the School Board
  • Submit a signed acknowledgement by parent(s) or legal guardian(s) for approval and support of that commitment

Finally, Applications are submitted to the Office of Communications and Community Engagement. Superintendent/Superintendent’s Designee convenes a Selection Committee to review applications and interview finalists. Superintendent/ Superintendent’s Designee notifies student candidates, sets up interview time, and provides information about the election process by video.

Student candidates are evaluated by the Division Selection Committee using the following criteria:

  • Response to prompt
  • Leadership potential
  • Ability to set and follow through on goals
  • Knowledge of school issues and the “Student Code of Conduct”
  • Enthusiasm and confidence
  • Ability to work with adults and other students
  • Communication and public speaking skills
  • Accountability
  • Open-mindedness and tact
  • Organizational skills

Application for 2027-2028 student school board member position will be made available in August 2026.
