Over the last week the Snow Memorial Library in Spotsylvania Courthouse has been closed do to unexplained building issues in the Marshall Center. No one from Spotsylvania Government so far has come forward to say what is going on in the Marshall Center meanwhile the Snow Memorial continues to be closed on a day to day basis. At this time Snow will once again be closed tomorrow.
The Spotsylvania Board of Supervisors recently approved the renovation of the Marshall Center. This is going to have an impact on Senior Services in the County and where they are going to be located.
The Marshall Center in Spotsylvania Courthouse is undergoing significant renovations starting in January 2025. , leading to permanent shifts for senior activities to other community centers like Chancellor and Lee Hill.
Key Details of the Marshall Center Renovations:
- Start Date: Renovations for the Marshall Center are slated to begin in January 2026, according to a Fredericksburg Advance article.
- Impact on Senior Programs: Many senior activities will be permanently relocated to other facilities, with Mondays/Wednesdays at 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. moving to the Chancellor Community Center and Tuesdays shifting to the Lee Hill Community Center.
- Project Scope:
- The2026 project will involvemajor upgrades to the HVAC, plumbing, electrical, insulation, and office layouts, with costs potentially ranging in the millions.
- County Support: The Board of Supervisors approved supporting a Community Project Funding Request for the renovations in April 2025, highlighting its importance.
- Seniors in the county and Senior Organizations are nor happy with the other changes that are going to be implemented. Taft Coghill has written in the Fredericksburg Free Press how the Marshall Center has been the home of many Senior Programs in the county and now they will be moved around the county.
The Marshall Center will be taken over by Spotsylvania County Public Schools next year, so the seniors who play pickleball, learn line dances and participate in various arts and crafts will see their diversions spread throughout the county (Coghill, Fredericksburg Free Press November 20, 2025.
- One of the programs being removed from the Marshall Center is Indoor Pickleball. Coghill points out “more than 1300 Seniors over the 10 months participated in this program”. (Coghill, Fredericksburg Free Press Nov 2025)
- Many of the Seniors are also unhappy that the programs run by Healthy Generations Agency on Aging are being moved from the Marshall Center to Lee Hill Community Center Monday, Thursday, and Friday.
- Finally they wish that Board of Supervisors would build a more robust Senior Center.
