❄️ Winter Weather Alert: Safe Driving Tips from VDOT ❄️

VDOT and Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office advises staying off the roads during snow when possible.

Being on the roads during this kind of weather endangers drivers as well as our officers and first responders in the event of an accident or disabled vehicle.

But if you must drive, take extra precautions to keep yourself and others safe.

🚘 Safe Driving Tips:

• Slow down and increase following distance — keep at least 5 seconds behind other vehicles and snowplows.

• Brake gently to avoid skidding; brake early and smoothly.

• Stay aware: use headlights, watch for icy bridges and overpasses, and avoid distractions.

• Skip cruise control on icy or snowy roads.

• Don’t pass snowplows unless absolutely necessary. Treat them like emergency vehicles.

• Park smart: Keep vehicles off the street during snow events to give plows room to work.

🧰 Vehicle Preparation:

• Check tire pressure — it drops in cold temps.

• Check fluids, wipers, and lights before heading out.

• Pack an emergency kit with blankets, food, water, flashlight, jumper cables, and an ice scraper.

• Carry traction materials like sand, salt, or cat litter.

Stay safe, prepared, and alert this winter! ❄️🚗
