The Federal Shutdown ended yesterday with the vote in the House of Representatives. The vote was 222 Republicans to 209 Democrats. Previously, the Spending Bill in the US Senate received the 60 votes required for passage including the 8 Democrats who broke from the Democratic leadership. President Trump signed the Bill into law around 9:30 pm.
Most of the Democrats in both the House and Senate opposed reopening. They were angry that the Republicans wanted the tax break on ACA to runout at the end of the year. The 8 Democratic Senators got reassurances from the Republican Senators that they would bring the tax credits to the floor by Mid December.
The Washington Post points out “The bill’s enactment reopened government “immediately” and funds it at current levels through Jan. 30. Some portions of the federal government, including the Departments of Agriculture and Veterans Affairs, as well as military construction and legislative branch operations, will be funded through September.”
According to CBS News “The shutdown impacted 42 million federal food aid recipients, 670,000 furloughed federal employees and 4,000 government workers who faced layoffs. It also threatened more than $7 billion in economic damage.”
SNAP will be fully funded through September 2026. Catherine Moran in K-12 Drive says the law “includes 107.5 Billion for SNAP and 8.5 Billion for WIC.”
The 675,000 Federal Workers who were Furloughed during the shutdown under this Law will receive their back pay.
The Smithsonian Museum will be gradually reopened over the next several days.
