Today, Americans cast ballots, an act celebrated as the cornerstone of democracy. But before the first vote is counted and long after the last result is declared, it is worth asking a quieter question: Who carries the weight of the nation between elections? Roads, bridges, and networks are easily photographed as “infrastructure.” Yet the truest infrastructure of any society is human, the teachers, aides, nurses, sanitation workers, and civil servants who hold up the daily life of the republic.
For decades, our policy discourse has spoken more fluently about steel and silicon than about souls. We measure progress in lane miles, not in lives stabilized. The language of efficiency, so vital in engineering, has migrated unexamined into human governance. When budgets treat people as cost centers rather than co-investors in public value, the structure of democracy begins to fracture from within.
