Fredericksburg Nationals went 1-2 against Kannapolis

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Fredericksburg Nationals went 1-2 against the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers over the weekend of Aug. 21-23, losing the series despite an impressive pitching performance from top prospect Landon Harmon.

The weekend left Fredericksburg at 24-29 in the second half and 62-67 overall, with the FredNats sitting fourth in the Carolina League North, eight games behind first-place Fayetteville.

Friday, Aug. 21

Fredericksburg 6, Kannapolis 3

The FredNats rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to turn a close game into a 6-3 victory. The win gave Fredericksburg a strong start to the weekend series.

Saturday, Aug. 22

Kannapolis 1, Fredericksburg 0

The Cannon Ballers shut out the FredNats in a pitchers’ duel.

Landon Harmon delivered one of the weekend’s biggest individual performances, throwing four innings and striking out seven while allowing just one run. The 19-year-old prospect was particularly impressive despite ultimately taking a no-decision in the narrow loss.

Fredericksburg managed only limited offense as Kannapolis escaped with a 1-0 victory.

Sunday, Aug. 23

Kannapolis 17, Fredericksburg 4

The series finale turned into an offensive explosion by Kannapolis.

Fredericksburg actually jumped ahead immediately when Coy James launched a 456-foot home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the first inning. It was James’ 19th homer of the season, putting him just one home run away from the FredNats’ career record.

The early lead didn’t hold. Kannapolis scored repeatedly in the middle and late innings and finished with 17 runs on 18 hits, defeating Fredericksburg 17-4. Clay Burdette drove in five runs for Kannapolis, including a grand slam.
