The fall high-school sports season officially moves into game week across Spotsylvania County, with football, volleyball and field hockey entering competition and cross country beginning its first contests later this week. The Virginia High School League lists August 24 as the first contest date for football, volleyball and field hockey, with cross country beginning August 26.

🏈 Football: Opening Night Is Coming

The biggest event of the week is Friday night, when the county’s football teams begin the 2026 season.

Spotsylvania Knights at Fluvanna County

Friday, Aug. 28 — 7 p.m. — Palmyra

The Spotsylvania Knights open the season on the road against the Fluvanna County Flying Flucos.

Both teams enter the opener at 0-0, making Friday the first official test of the new season.

The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Fluvanna County High School in Palmyra.

Spotsylvania’s schedule then brings Massaponax to town Sept. 4 before the Knights begin the heart of their Battlefield Conference schedule later in September.

Courtland at Massaponax

Friday, Aug. 28 — 7 p.m.

Another all-Spotsylvania matchup highlights opening weekend as the Courtland Cougars travel to Massaponax Panthers.

MaxPreps lists the game for 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28.

That gives county football fans an early-season rivalry game to watch while Spotsylvania begins its season in Fluvanna County.

The Chancellor Chargers open their 2026 varsity football season Friday, August 28, against the Riverbend Bears at 7:00 pm.

The Chargers head to Riverbend looking to start the 2026 campaign with a victory, while the Bears will defend their home field in one of the area’s first major Friday-night showdowns.

🏐 Volleyball Gets Underway

Volleyball is also officially entering competition this week. VHSL lists Aug. 24 as the first contest date.

The Chancellor Chargers have a home match scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 27, against Stafford, with the varsity contest listed for 5 p.m.

The Courtland Cougars also enter the season with plenty of attention after a remarkable 2025 postseason run that reached the VHSL Class 4 state semifinals.

🏃 Cross Country Begins

Cross country joins the fall competition schedule on Wednesday, Aug. 26, according to the VHSL calendar.

That means county runners will be among the first Spotsylvania athletes officially competing in the 2026 fall season.

🏑 Field Hockey

Field hockey also has its first contest date this week, Monday, Aug. 24.

With the fall sports calendar now officially open, county teams will begin filling out the early-season standings over the next several days.
