Series Introduction

In Part 1 of the Public Agenda Power Series, Management of Power, we explored the early stages of ethical drift, the subtle separation between values and behavior that begins when public leaders prioritize control over trust. We discussed how McGregor’s Theory X assumptions can cause leaders to rationalize fear-based management, and how Kahneman’s research on intuitive decision-making exposes how good people justify bad choices when under pressure. Today, in Part 2, we move beyond drift to collapse, where ethical erosion becomes institutionalized and the leader’s conscience no longer serves as a compass. This installment exposes what happens when moral conviction yields to convenience and when the psychology of leadership gives way to the pathology of power. The series will conclude with Part 3 next Thursday, exploring how integrity can be rebuilt once trust has been lost.
