Massaponax visits Spotsylvania, Courtland welcomes Louisa County as local teams return to the field

SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. — The lights come on again Friday night, and Week 2 of the high school football season brings two games to Spotsylvania County — including an all-county matchup between Massaponax and Spotsylvania.

Massaponax travels to Spotsylvania High School after opening the season with a four-point victory over Courtland. Courtland, meanwhile, returns home looking for its first victory when Louisa County comes to Smith Station Road.

Riverbend moved its Week 2 game up to Thursday night at Forest Park, while Chancellor has the week off before returning to action Sept. 10.

Kickoff for both Friday night games is scheduled for 7 p.m.

This one has everything needed for an early-season county showdown.

Massaponax enters Friday night 1-0 after defeating Courtland 30-26 in its opener Aug. 28. The Panthers generated 211 rushing yards in that victory, with senior Brian Henderson leading the early-season ground attack. Henderson rushed for 109 yards and scored three touchdowns in the opener. Spotsylvania also put plenty of points on the scoreboard in Week 1 but came home from Fluvanna County with a loss.

That sets up an intriguing contrast Friday night.

Massaponax has already demonstrated that it can win a close game. Spotsylvania has shown that it can score.

Now the Knights get their first home game of the season — against another Spotsylvania County school.

For Massaponax, a victory would produce a 2-0 start before the Panthers host Riverbend Sept. 11. Spotsylvania will be looking to even its record at 1-1 before an open week and a Sept. 18 trip to Brooke Point. (MaxPreps.com)

THE GAZETTE MATCHUP TO WATCH: Massaponax’s rushing attack against a Spotsylvania team that surrendered 44 points at Fluvanna. If the Knights can slow the Panthers on the ground while continuing to generate points of their own, this could become another high-scoring Friday night.

Courtland doesn’t have to wait long for another opportunity after its narrow season-opening loss.

The Cougars fell 30-26 at Massaponax last Friday despite producing 239 yards of offense — 149 through the air and 90 on the ground. (MaxPreps.com)

Senior receiver Ahmari Boxley enters Week 2 after recording 114 receiving yards in the opener and scoring twice. Senior running back Tyrik Newman rushed for 66 yards, while sophomore Olayele Tijani recorded 11 tackles and junior Noah Quitugua had two sacks. (MaxPreps.com)

Courtland now gets its first home game against Louisa County.

The matchup is a non-region contest and represents Courtland’s final game before an open week. The Cougars return Sept. 18 at Orange County before beginning Battlefield District play Sept. 25 against King George. (MaxPreps.com)

THE GAZETTE MATCHUP TO WATCH: Courtland showed it could stay with Massaponax for four quarters. The question Friday is whether the Cougars can turn that competitive opener into their first victory.

RIVERBEND PLAYS THURSDAY NIGHT

Riverbend won’t be under the Friday night lights this week.

The Bears moved into Week 2 on Thursday, Sept. 3, traveling to Woodbridge for a 7 p.m. non-region game against Forest Park.

Riverbend entered the game 1-0 after an emphatic 49-0 victory over Chancellor in its season opener. Forest Park entered 0-1 after losing 28-6 to Centreville. (MaxPreps.com)

Riverbend began the season with considerable expectations after going 11-0 to start the 2025 campaign, winning the Commonwealth District and eventually reaching the regional final. CHANCELLOR GETS AN EXTRA WEEK

Chancellor does not play Friday.

The Chargers opened their season with the 49-0 loss at Riverbend and now have additional preparation time before traveling to Fluvanna County on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. (MaxPreps.com)
