Massaponax Visits Spotsylvania, Courtland Hosts Louisa as County Football Season Moves Into September

SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY — Week 2 of the high school football season brings two Friday-night games involving Spotsylvania County teams, including an all-county matchup between Massaponax and Spotsylvania.

MASSAPONAX AT SPOTSYLVANIA
Massaponax travels to Spotsylvania High School with both teams coming off high-scoring opening games — but with very different results.
The Panthers enter Week 2 at 1-0 after defeating Courtland 30-26 on Aug. 28.
Spotsylvania enters at 0-1 after falling 44-36 at Fluvanna County in its opener. (maxpreps.com)
That sets up an intriguing early-season county matchup.
Massaponax demonstrated in Week 1 that it can survive a close game. Courtland led 26-23 late before the Panthers scored in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
Spotsylvania, meanwhile, showed that it can put points on the board. Scoring 36 points on opening night gives the Knights something positive to build upon as they prepare for their home opener.
For Massaponax, Friday offers an opportunity to begin the season 2-0.
For Spotsylvania, it is an opportunity to earn its first victory — against another county school.

LOUISA COUNTY AT COURTLAND
Courtland returns home Friday looking to rebound from its heartbreaking four-point loss to Massaponax.
The Cougars will face a Louisa County team that opened its season with a 27-24 victory over Godwin.
That gives Friday’s game a straightforward early-season storyline: Courtland is seeking its first victory, while Louisa arrives trying to improve to 2-0. (maxpreps.com)
Courtland showed plenty of fight in its opener. The Cougars scored in every quarter against Massaponax and carried a late lead before the Panthers answered.
Now comes another test.
Kickoff: Friday, Sept. 4, 7 p.m.
Location: Courtland High School.
RIVERBEND PLAYS THURSDAY
Riverbend will get an early start on Week 2.
After overwhelming Chancellor 49-0 in its opener, the Bears travel to Forest Park for a 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3 game.

CHANCELLOR HAS THE WEEKEND OFF
Chancellor does not play Friday.

Friday night’s Massaponax-Spotsylvania matchup gives county football fans their second consecutive week with a game between two Spotsylvania schools.

And the Friday night lights are back on.
