Fredericksburg records 19th victory of season against Delmarva as final regular-season series arrives

SALISBURY, Md. — The Fredericksburg Nationals ended August with an exclamation point.

Fredericksburg shut out the Delmarva Shorebirds 11-0 Sunday, Aug. 30, recording its 19th victory against Delmarva this season — the most victories against a single opponent in Fredericksburg Nationals franchise history.

The FredNats struck immediately.

Coy James singled to begin the game, advanced on an error, stole third and scored on a Jordan Williams sacrifice fly.

Juan Cruz walked, and Hunter Hines followed with a two-run home run to center field.

Just like that, Fredericksburg led 3-0.

And the FredNats weren’t finished.

The offense continued piling on runs while Fredericksburg pitching prevented Delmarva from mounting any response.

By the end, the scoreboard told the story:

Fredericksburg 11, Delmarva 0.

The blowout also provided a satisfying conclusion to a weekend that had included two frustrating late-inning losses.

Delmarva defeated Fredericksburg 4-2 Friday, scoring twice in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Saturday brought another late disappointment. The Shorebirds won 7-6, again pushing across the decisive run in the bottom of the eighth.

Sunday was different.

There would be no late Delmarva comeback.

Fredericksburg had already put the game away.

The victory gave the FredNats the series win and established the franchise record for victories over a single opponent.

FINAL REGULAR-SEASON SERIES BEGINS SEPTEMBER 1

The calendar has turned to September, and the Fredericksburg Nationals are entering the final stretch.

Fredericksburg opens its final regular-season series Tuesday, Sept. 1, against the Wilson Warbirds.

For local baseball fans, that means one final week of regular-season FredNats baseball before attention turns completely toward what comes next.

The long minor-league season has traveled from the cool evenings of spring through the heat of summer.

Now September has arrived.

And every remaining game matters a little more.
