Long Time Commissioner Of The Revenue Passes Away

It is with a heavy heart that Spotsylvania announces the passing of the county’s Commissioner of the Revenue, Deborah "Debbie" Fisher Williams, who departed February 9, 2026, at age 74. Ms. Williams was a highly respected fixture in the community, devoting more than half her life to serving Spotsylvania County residents. Her career spanned nearly 40 years, including over three decades as commissioner of the revenue. She began her tenure in Spotsylvania as a county employee before multiple promotions led to her 1995 appointment to the role, filling the unexpired term of her mother-in-law, Mary B. Williams.

The county first hired Ms. Williams in May 1987 for a temporary position checking Business Professional and Occupational Licenses. In December 1988, she became the full-time meals tax administrator before advancing to a supervisory role in February 1994. Five months later, she was tapped to serve as assistant to the commissioner and eventually began her tenure as Spotsylvania’s commissioner of the revenue on Jan. 1, 1996. Spotsylvania County voters selected Ms. Williams to serve four-year terms in successive elections, with her most recent reelection in November 2023.

Ms. Williams was a proud resident of Spotsylvania County, widely respected for her dedication to public service, both locally and across the Commonwealth. With an unflappable nature, she took great pride in serving Spotsylvania residents and was committed to providing excellent customer service. During her tenure, she saw the county’s population nearly double, increasing from about 77,000 to over 150,000.

She will be deeply missed by colleagues and her loyal staff, who will remember her strength, dedication to fairness, sense of humor, and relentless love for her family. Truly a trusted friend to all, she leaves a lasting legacy. Spotsylvania County extends its heartfelt condolences to the Williams family.
